GIA diamond, GIA certification or GIA report are just some of the terms you’ll come across when you’re engagement ring shopping – short for a diamond graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Ever wondered what’s all the fuss about in getting a GIA diamond? Learn more about GIA diamonds and why savvy customers rely on GIA through this article.

WHO ARE THE GIA?

GIA is an independent, non-profit organisation that conducts gem research, educates gem professionals and sets the standards for determining a diamond’s quality. Fun fact! GIA is the creator of the 4Cs of diamond quality and the GIA International Diamond Grading System™. One of GIA’s main functions is the grading of diamonds. GIA does not sell diamonds nor represent the interests of diamond jewellers, retailers or sellers.

WHAT IS A DIAMOND CERTIFICATION?

When purchasing a diamond, whether loose or in a setting, the diamond will almost always come with a diamond certification. A diamond could be graded by the other diamond certifying bodies other than GIA such as the American Gem Society (AGS), the International Gemological Institute (IGI), and Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD).

A diamond certification is the document where a third-party evaluates and reports the characteristics of the diamond. Trained professionals within the grading entity will evaluate, scrutinise and measure the diamonds using professional equipment such as a 10x magnification loupe or microscope. Diamonds are graded on various elements such as the 4Cs, fluorescence, length and width.

WHAT DOES A “GIA CERTIFIED DIAMOND” MEAN?

The common misconception is that GIA certifies diamonds. However, GIA does not certify diamonds, they grade them. The term “GIA certified” is most commonly used in the jewellery industry to refer to diamonds that have undergone the rigorous grading process and the reports that come along with them. Hence, GIA does not certify the diamond or its value. GIA simply issues a report on the results of its evaluation on the diamond.

WHY IS DIAMOND CERTIFICATION IMPORTANT?

Firstly, it proves that the diamond has been tested and it is indeed a natural diamond.

Secondly, a diamond certification by a reputable diamond grading laboratory acts as your assurance of the diamond’s quality.

Thirdly, a diamond certification helps to put a diamond seller and the customers on an equal playing field. With a diamond certification, one can be certain that the information stated is accurate, and that the diamond will not fall victim to inflated grading.

Finally, for a further peace of mind, diamonds graded by the various grading laboratories are laser inscribed with a unique diamond identification number on its girdle which matches it to the diamond certification. The unique identification number, in letters and numerals that are no larger than a few microns, serves two purposes: firstly, to trace the origin of the diamond and secondly, it acts as a further security measure to match diamond to owner.

ARE DIAMONDS WITHOUT CERTIFICATION FAKE?

Not necessarily! Not all diamonds come with certificates but just because it doesn’t, does not mean it’s fake. However, diamonds that are graded and have certifications from reputable laboratories significantly minimises the risk of a jeweller taking advantage by pricing the diamond higher than what its actual quality commands.
